Posterous theme by Cory Watilo

First Colour Set

Yup, still crap, but less so - I think maybe I used the wrong speed of film for the mono shots.

Anyway, there's no real theme, just me dandering about taking pictures with a plastic camera.

What I would appreciate is any advice from people who know about these things - I'm rubbish when it comes to film speeds and the like, which is why I'm doing this; to get better at it.

First Black and White Shots

So, I'm not sure what anyone else's reaction would be, but I'm quite pleased. Not that they're good, but that they're pretty crap. The whole point of this exercise was for me to see if I could get back into film photography again after 10 years away from it, and to see if I could force myself to improve.

Well, I couldn't get any worse.

At the same time, there is a lot I like about the images. Honestly. Firstly, it's that it's very clear that my shitty little Holga puts its own scratchy stamp on things, although I'm not entirely sure what the vertical streaks on every one of these photos is from - they don't appear on the colour ones at any rate.

Also, I love that these images exist - I have the negatives, so I know for a fact that I took them in an actual camera and that actual light hit actual film. Crap pictures or not, there is something really satisfying about that that I had forgotten.

Back in a moment with some colour pics!

Deep breath

I've just handed in my first two rolls of 120 Medium Format film from my Holga 120N camera.

I'm a bit excited, to be honest, in a way that I haven't been for years about photography. Don't get me wrong - I'm fully expecting the pics to be awful. Dreadful. But at least there will be a sort of truthfulness about them, if filtered through a plastic lens. Although to be completely honest I'm pretty sure I forgot to take the lens cap off at least once...

One roll was colour, the other black & white, which will take until Tuesday to be developed, and then I'll need to scan it in. A friend at work is lending me a film scanner to try with a view to buying, so I should have something to show you by next weekend. In the meantime I'm going to plough through some more film.

I'm looking for project ideas to focus me a bit, so if you've any ideas for 12 shot sets I'd love to hear them.
